i spoke to mark kelly yesterday about his testimony. he said that we're both -- he and congresswoman giffords, are moderate gun owners. they own guns. they have been supporters of gun rights for a long time. he also said that he hopes that they can do something about the safety of our kids and our communities. one tidbit he told me is that he and gabby giffords used to go together to the nra practice range just outside of washington. he almost joined the nra himself but never got around to it. that's their perspective. and then of course on the other side of the witness table the last person we will hear from will be wayne lapierre who will say a lot of familiar things that we've heard from him over the years but even more specifically since the shootings at newtown he's going to say in fact his prepared remarks say that he's going to say law abiding gun owners will not accept the blame for acts of violence of deranged criminals. expect him to be as combative and defiant for people who own guns as he has in the past. >> i'm sitting here

that coming from mark kelly. and you can only imagine what he is feeling, what his wife gabby giffords is feeling, when they look at that and hear information about yet another shooting taking place in arizona. just unbelievable. coming on a day when people are talking about guns, gun rights, the debate continues. a lot of emotion behind this deba debate, a lot of different ideas about policy initiatives and what is the appropriate thing to do and how to protect people's guns' rights at the same time how to proteevent something lik this from happening again. it happened again in phoenix, arizona. we'll take a quick break. understand my charts, and spend more time trading. their quick trade bar lets my account follow me online so i can react in real-time. plus, my local scottrade office is there to help. because they know i don't trade like everybody. i trade like me. i'm with scottrade. kelly talking about how there needs to be gun restrictions. kelly talking about how he is a gun owner. he and gabrielle giffords are both gun owners and believe in the second amendment and right to bear arms but there needs to be a conversation about gun violence. he talked about the need for better background checks in this country and eliminating restrictions on data. i want to bring in our chief congressional correspondent dana bash who is in the hearing room. one of the things we heard about a few minutes ago was about going after straw purchasers. could you explain to our viewers what exactly are straw purchasers and this is an area of legislation where there might be some accomplishment? >> reporter: if you listen to the line of questioning that the chairman patrick leahy is going through, you sort of see kind of the wheels churning and the outlines of potential legislation that he might be thinking it. it's all focused on background checks and making sure that guns are not in the hands of the wrong people. he talks about straw purchaser
